Nail care can be one of the most common situations in which veterinary professionals and pet owners encounter patient fear, stress, anxiety, and sometimes secondary self-defense behavior. This stress can damage the veterinary relationship with the patient, complicating veterinary care into the future. Learn strategies for encouraging patient comfort with nail care, and client education techniques to involve the client in the care team and prevent or decrease phobia of veterinary care related to nail maintenance.

Learning Objectives:
1) Identify anatomical features that may influence comfort with nail care.
2) Observe and respond to signs of patient stress during nail care.
3) Construct desensitization and counterconditiong plans for nail care.
4) Recognize the role of operant conditioning in nail care.
5) Identify situations where DVM involvement in the case is appropriate.
